Stitching Books@ BALTIC

The last print & bookmaking session with women from Tyneside Women’s Health culminated in a library of books being made for their exhibition of work as part of the Fabulous Books, Fantastic Places project with artist Theresa Easton.  The session took place in the studio at BALTIC.

Quay Space, Level 2 presents an exhibition of all the participatory work made by a whole host of enthusiastic participants, including women from Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside.  The participants designed and printed a series of hand stitched books for the exhibition.  Based around the theme of play & leisure, in the Ouseburn Valley & Byker, the group spent 8 weeks exploring printmaking technique and bookmaking ideas.  A visit from Kitty Porteous, from the Ouseburn Trust, set the scene and established the role of heritage interpretation and the role visual art has to play.  Complimenting Alex Henry’s delivery for Beyond the Map with the Ouseburn Trust (a six-month digital storytelling project), the women explored themes play, music, past-times and children’s books in their Japanese Stab Bound Books.

The work is on display @BALTIC until the 23rd June, Level 2, Quay Space and forms part of BALTIC Artist’s Book Fair (June 14th & 15th) celebrating the Festival of the North East.  Entry to the book fair is FREE with plenty of exhibition stalls, activities and exhibitions. There’s a lot going on up North!

Fantastic pictures! The quality of work is reflected in the faces of those taking part in the projects: competent, engaged and solar. Excellent to see community projects of such a high quality!
